Privacy Policy

Engram respects and protects your privacy. This policy explains how your information is handled. Engram is built on local-first principles, meaning your data remains entirely in your own control.

1. Introduction

We believe that privacy is a fundamental human right. Engram is designed from the ground up to minimize data collection. Except for the technical communication necessary to provide resources as described below, we do not access, store, or transmit your private data.

2. Data Collection and Processing

  • Personal Data: No registration or account creation is required to use the App. We do not collect, require, or request any personal identification details (such as your name, email address, phone number, or social media profiles).
  • Study Data: Your customized wordbooks, SRS memory scheduling, dictation history, and learning analytics are stored locally on your device (utilizing SwiftData and AppStorage). We have no access to this data.
  • iCloud Sync: If you choose to enable iCloud synchronization, your study data is synced securely through Apple's CloudKit. This data is transferred directly between your device and your private Apple ID iCloud database. The developer does not hold any external server database and has no means to access, modify, or view your iCloud sync records.
  • Resource Sync: To fetch online vocabulary books or metadata updates, the App connects to our servers. During these requests, technical data such as your IP address and language preferences are processed temporarily to fulfill the download. We do not associate this technical data with your identity and do not store it for advertising or tracking.

3. Device Permissions

  • Photo Library Write Access (NSPhotoLibraryAddUsageDescription): Used solely when you request to save a generated study card or image to your system photo library. The App does not read, modify, or access any other images in your album.
  • Local Notifications (UNUserNotificationCenter): Requests permission to schedule local alarms and reminders on your device to keep your daily vocabulary study streak. We do not use any external push servers; all calculations are executed locally.

4. Data Sharing and Third-Party SDKs

We do not sell, trade, rent, or share your data with third parties. There are no advertising SDKs, tracking libraries, or analytics scripts (e.g., Firebase, AdMob, etc.) embedded in the App, ensuring a completely private, ad-free environment.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

Since your learning statistics are stored locally and in your private iCloud, you retain full ownership and control over your records:

  • Local Deletion: Simply uninstalling the App from your device will delete all local study history and settings.
  • iCloud Deletion: You can manage or purge cloud data at any time by going to iOS Settings -> Your Apple ID -> iCloud -> Manage Storage -> Engram, and selecting "Delete Data".

6. Children's Privacy

We do not collect any personal data from children under the age of 13. Since no personal data is collected or transmitted, the App is fully compliant with COPPA and GDPR regulations, and is safe for users of all ages.
